All About Fashion in the 1920's
When you think about fashion in the 1920's, the flapper probably comes to mind. The word flapper was the term used to describe young women in the so-called Roaring Twenties who bobbed their hair, wore dark red lipstick, bound their bosoms and wore short, sleek and attention getting frocks. Knees were exposed for the first time ever in fashionable society, and women took more chances with what they wore.
Now, not everyone in the twenties was a flapper. Far from it, actually! The long, lean look was still in, however it was seen in sophisticated dresses that reached the floor and two piece tunic/skirt combinations finished off with an ornate hat. Evening wear consisted of sparkly, floor length gowns that displayed more skin than the gowns of years prior.
Blouses were all the rage in the world of fashion in the 1920's. Stylish women everywhere wore blouses in fabrics like silk and crepe in a variety of colors. Often, these blouses were made into an ensemble with the addition of a long skirt in a complementary fabric and color, and a hat. Hats were worn as an addition to an outfit and were often ornately decorated with ribbons and flowers.
Stockings and pantyhose were worn by women of a certain social standing. However, often the young ladies designated as flappers did not wear any kind of covering over their bare legs. This was certainly not the acceptable standard and helped contribute to the negative connotation of the term flapper.
Men's fashions included suits and shirts in colors like light brown, sage green, peach, periwinkle and gray. Hats were bowler style and normally seen in black. Shoes were often of the lace-up variety and featured in either white or black, or tan and black. Tweed and flannel were popular fabrics for men's fashions. Silk was popular as well, but mostly for neckwear.
The twenties were a time of fun and excitement. People were into Jazz music and innovative, energetic dances like the Charleston. It was all about throwing aside the rules of so-called polite society and having a good time. After all, they weren't called the Roaring Twenties for nothing!
