The Life of a Fashion Model

Many young girls dream of becoming models. If you're one of them, or know someone who is, then it would serve you well to learn more about the life of a fashion model and what it involves.

The first thing any girl who wants to be a model should do is find representation. The biggest modeling agencies exist in New York City and bear names like Ford, Wilhelmina, and Elite. There are tons more agencies in NYC and around the world, but these represent the creme de la creme.

Before even going to an agency, a prospective model needs to be prepared. That means bringing a portfolio with her, filled with professional photographs of herself in various settings. For example, some of the photos should be color and some should be black and white. Some should be head shots and some should be full length. For some of the head shot photographs, a model should be makeup free so that the agents can see her true look and photogenic potential.

Height and weight are certainly considerations when it comes to modeling. Runway models must be very tall and thin. However, there are agencies that represent petite models and plus sized models. If you fit into one of these categories, you may never find yourself on the cover of Vogue, but you may be able to make a good living doing catalog work.

When it comes to working, the life of a fashion model isn't all fun and games. Some shoots begin at the crack of dawn and last all day. A model must be well rested, blemish free, and able to put her best face forward, so to speak. In the New York modeling world, it is easy for a model to fall into the trap of all night parties, drinking and even drugs. But to succeed in the world of modeling, you must avoid these temptations like the plague and focus on going to bed early to avoid puffy eyes and tired skin.

Models often have to travel a lot. If you're considering becoming a fashion model, be prepared to rack up frequent flyer miles. You may find yourself going places like Milan, Paris, Rome, and other international destinations.

The most important thing for anyone who wants to get into modeling is to develop a thick skin. It's likely you'll get a lot of rejections before getting a yes from an agent. And even having an agent doesn't guarantee work. But with persistence, determination and a lot of luck, you just might find yourself living the life of a fashion model!
